About Death

Death in art has been explored for centuries as a way of confronting mortality, loss, fear, memory, and the fragile nature of human existence. Rather than simply representing an ending, death can become a symbol of change, absence, uncertainty, or the passage of time.

Artists have approached death through religious imagery, symbolism, portraiture, surrealism, and scenes drawn from everyday life. Skulls, disappearing figures, empty spaces, darkness, and moments of vulnerability can all suggest mortality without necessarily depicting death directly.

The artworks presented here explore death as part of the human experience. Some confront mortality openly, while others approach it through psychological tension, dark humour, symbolism, or ambiguity. Death may be present as an event, a possibility, a memory, or simply something waiting quietly in the background.

These works are not necessarily about despair. Thinking about death can also intensify our awareness of life — of relationships, choices, memories, and the limited time we have with one another.

Through figurative painting, symbolism, and personal storytelling, these artworks leave the meaning of death unresolved and invite the viewer to bring their own experiences to the image.
