About Symbolism

Symbolism in art uses visual elements to communicate ideas, emotions, and concepts that extend beyond literal representation. Through symbols, metaphors, and visual associations, artists can explore themes that are difficult to express through direct observation alone.

The Symbolist movement emerged during the late nineteenth century as a response to realism and naturalism. Rather than focusing on the visible world, symbolist artists sought to reveal inner truths, dreams, emotions, and spiritual or psychological experiences.

The symbolic paintings in this collection draw upon recurring themes such as memory, identity, relationships, mortality, transformation, and the human condition. Objects, figures, colors, and environments may carry meanings that are intentionally open to interpretation.

Symbolism encourages viewers to participate actively in the artwork. Different people may discover different meanings depending on their own experiences and perspectives. In this way, symbolic art creates a dialogue between the painting and the observer.

These works combine symbolism with figurative painting, surreal imagery, and emotional storytelling, creating multiple layers of meaning beneath the visible surface.
