Behind the Veil

Behind the Veil, figurative expressionist painting by Andy Renard featuring three partially obscured faces behind flowing layers of color.

Some people hide behind walls. Others hide behind memories.

Behind the Veil explores the invisible layers that shape our identities and influence how we see ourselves and one another. Faces emerge through flowing curtains of color, partially concealed yet never completely lost. What remains visible is only a fragment of a much larger story.

The story behind the painting

We rarely see one another as we truly are.

Between every person and the outside world lies a series of invisible veils. Some are woven from memory, others from experience. Some are shaped by love, loss, disappointment, hope, fear, or longing. Layer by layer they settle upon us throughout our lives, slowly becoming part of who we are.

The veil in this painting is not a physical object. It is not a barrier imposed from the outside. It is the accumulation of everything we have lived through. Every joy leaves a trace. Every wound leaves a mark. Every triumph, every mistake, every relationship and every farewell becomes another translucent layer through which the world is seen.

Over time these layers begin to merge. They blur the boundaries between what we remember and what we imagine, between who we once were and who we have become. The faces emerge only partially because no person is ever completely visible. We reveal fragments of ourselves while other parts remain hidden beneath years of experience.

Some veils protect us. Others isolate us. Some are built from fear, others from wisdom. Some are created by suffering, while others are formed by love. Yet together they shape the way we move through life and the way we are perceived by others.

The flowing structures in the painting were created deliberately, but they came to represent something far more organic: the silent accumulation of life’s own sediments. They drift across the figures like time itself, obscuring and revealing at the same moment.

What remains visible is only a glimpse.

What remains hidden may be the greater story.

About the painting

Behind the Veil is a figurative painting that examines the invisible layers accumulated throughout a lifetime. Memories, relationships, fears, hopes, disappointments, and moments of joy leave traces that gradually shape our perception of the world and ourselves.

The vertical flowing structures create a veil-like presence across the composition. Rather than acting as a physical barrier, they symbolize the experiences that settle upon us over time. Some layers offer protection, while others create distance. Together they obscure and reveal the figures simultaneously, suggesting that identity is never fixed or fully accessible.

The three faces appear suspended between visibility and concealment. Their expressions remain open to interpretation, inviting the viewer to reflect on the personal histories, emotions, and memories that influence every human encounter.

Through its combination of figurative elements and organic abstraction, the painting explores the tension between what is seen and what remains hidden beneath the surface.
